Ignis Vortex Studio

Our Story

Building resilience into every design

How We Got Here

Look, we didn't start Ignis Vortex because we wanted another cookie-cutter firm in Vancouver. Back in 2014, after watching too many communities struggle with fire damage and poorly planned rebuilds, a few of us got together and decided there's gotta be a better way.

We've spent years diving deep into fire-resistant materials, studying how cities can actually breathe better, and honestly? Learning from our mistakes along the way. The wildfires hitting BC year after year aren't just headlines for us - they're wake-up calls that changed how we think about every single project.

Our Vancouver studio sits right where urban density meets natural beauty, which gives us this unique perspective on balancing growth with environmental responsibility. We're not trying to fight nature - we're designing with it.

What Drives Us

It's not complicated, really

01

Resilience First

Every building we design needs to stand up to whatever nature throws at it. Fire, storms, earthquakes - we've seen what happens when structures aren't ready. Can't compromise on this.

02

Real Sustainability

Not just slapping solar panels on roofs and calling it green. We're talking about materials that last, designs that reduce energy needs naturally, and buildings that don't cost the earth to maintain.

03

Community Impact

A building doesn't exist in a vacuum. How does it change the neighborhood? Does it make the area better or just more crowded? These questions matter more than fancy facades.

Our Approach

Here's the thing - we don't have a one-size-fits-all template. Each project starts with questions, not answers. What's the site telling us? What does the client actually need versus what they think they want? How's the building gonna age over decades?

We've worked on everything from heritage restorations in Gastown to brand-new commercial developments in Surrey. The through-line? We obsess over details that most people won't notice but will definitely feel.

Fire-resistant doesn't mean ugly concrete bunkers. Sustainable doesn't mean sacrificing comfort. And modern doesn't mean forgetting where we came from. That's the balance we're always chasing.

Who We Work With

Our team's a mix of registered architects, structural engineers, sustainability consultants, and urban planners. We've got folks who've been doing this for 30 years working alongside recent grads bringing fresh perspectives. That tension between experience and innovation? That's where the good stuff happens.

Design & Planning

Where ideas turn into workable plans. This crew handles everything from initial sketches to final permits.

Project Delivery

The folks who make sure what we drew actually gets built right. They've saved our butts more times than we can count.

What's Next for Us

We're diving deeper into modular construction methods that don't sacrifice quality. Experimenting with new fire-retardant materials that actually look good. And honestly? We're working on being better listeners - sometimes the best design solution comes from just paying attention to what people really need.

Climate change isn't slowing down, and neither are we. Every project's a chance to prove that smart design can make communities safer, buildings more sustainable, and cities more livable.
